Johannes Gutenberg University is a large comprehensive university and, as such, is comprised of ten faculties and two schools of the arts. The faculties’ research, teaching, and transfer activities are assiduously supported by employees in 13 central institutions, the eight central administration departments, and the Executive University Board’s staff units.

Participation and university autonomy are ensured by the university’s central bodies: the University Council, the Senate, and the Executive University Board. University-wide and decentralized elections and committees give all university groups (university teachers, students, as well as academic, artistic, and non-academic staff members) the chance to play a role in developing and shaping JGU.

In its mission statement, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz commits itself to continuous further development in all areas. We translate this goal into directives for our day-to-day actions with strategy papers and guidelines.

Scientific research thrives on cooperation. In addition to its numerous international partnerships in specific subjects, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz also collaborates closely with strategic partners in Europe, in Germany, in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region, and in Mainz in matters of research and teaching.

Of particular importance at the university level are the cooperative agreements and memberships in the German Rectors’ Conference, the European University Association, the Magna Charta Universitatum, the EU4All project, GAIN, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the DAAD, and the Trinational Metropolitan Region of the Upper Rhine.
